The author - Australian historian - based the story mainly on Australian archives and other sources. Except of the New Guinea, the book covers fights for other islands - from loosing the Australian base, Rabaul, and capturing it by the Japanese, to Japanese surrender. They fortified the base, which was quite unsecured before, made it almost impregnable and known as "Gibraltar of the Pacific Ocean". |
